Mayze Puts Up 19 in Loss to Marshall

The Lady Eagles fell on Thursday night to Marshall, 80-65.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball fell on Thursday night to Marshall, 80-65.
Southern Miss (11-10, 3-7) fell to Marshall (9-12, 4-6) but saw 19 points from senior Alarie Mayze and a near double-double from Respect Leaphart.
The Lady Eagles and the Thundering Herd got off to a relatively slow start, but saw a good three-pointer from Allie Kennedy to start the scoring off for Southern Miss. The pace picked up for Marshall, who ended the quarter with a 21-8 lead. At the break, they continued to hold their lead, going into half at 44-32. In the final frame of the contest, the Lady Eagles cut the lead to as much as three behind Daishai Almond early on. The Herd sealed their victory by way of shooting 73 percent from the floor and putting up 27 points. Despite being outscored in each quarter, the Lady Eagles had a 40-24 edge when it came to points in the paint. The turnovers from Southern Miss proved fatal, losing the ball 18 times which gave Marshall 24 of their points. The Herd were led by junior Taylor Pearson who had a career night, scoring 21 points and draining six 3-pointers. Marshall had four out of the nine who saw the floor score in double-digits, while Southern Miss saw double-digit games from Mayze, Leaphart, and Kelsey Jones.
Mayze tied her career high in 3-pointers made and attempted against Marshall, hitting three of her eight shots from beyond the arc. She tied her career-high in points with 19, just shy of her first 20-point game. She dished out four assists in her 39 minutes of play. The last time she saw the floor for that many minutes was last season against Marshall on their hardwood.
Senior Leaphart had a near double-double, putting up 16 points and wiping the boards nine times. She went 50 percent from the foul line and came away with two steals. Kelsey Jones went five-for-seven from the field and had five rebounds and 10 points. Senior Amber Landing had four blocks, putting her just one stop away from tying Liz Biland from the No. 3 spot on the all-time blocks list at Southern Miss with 111 in her career. Mayze and Almond led the team in assists with four apiece.
The Lady Eagles also celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day with all of Southern Miss' women's teams in attendance. All were recognized at halftime and gave postgame autographs after the contest. Daphnie Poole was recognized along with them at halftime as she has been serving girls in athletics in the Hattiesburg area for many years.
