Lady Eagles Fall to WKU 81-65

The Lady Eagles saw great performances out of Allie Kennedy and Respect Leaphart, but fell to the Lady Toppers on Saturday afternoon.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss fell against WKU on Saturday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum, 81-65, but saw good performances out of senior Respect Leaphart and junior Allie Kennedy.
Southern Miss started the game behind, scoring just six points to the Lady Topper's 13 in the first quarter. WKU's shots from the field in that quarter were just three 3-point shots, accompanied by two good free throw shots. The Lady Eagles saw a layup from Daishai Almond and a jumper from Respect Leaphart in that quarter.
The second quarter saw the Lady Eagles heat it up, with 18 points to WKU's 23. Half of Southern Miss' points came from junior Allie Kennedy who made three 3-pointers in the frame, tying her career-best. Alarie Mayze also made a 3-ball. The Lady Eagles held the three-point shooting to a minimum for WKU, allowing only one shot to be taken and only one shot fall. The third quarter happened in the paint for Southern Miss, with nine layups made by the Lady Eagles and only one jumper. The same was true for WKU, with six layups and three shots from the field.
The fourth quarter started with the Lady Eagles down by 14, and WKU scored 13 points within the first five minutes of the quarter to the Lady Eagles eight, making the score 74-52 in the Lady Topper's favor. Alarie Mayze made four good shots of the Lady Eagles' 10 that dropped during the frame, two being layups, one from just above the free throw line, and one 3-pointer. Allie Kennedy tried to carry her three-point shooting into the second half, but they just wouldn't fall for the junior. Jalise Smallwood and Destiny Smith put in good work in that fourth frame, with Smith putting in two layups and one jumper in the paint.
Kennedy finished the game with 3-of-7 shooting from the 3-point line, tying her career highs in both 3-pointers made and attempted. She had nine points on the night with five assists and three rebounds. Seniors Leaphart and Mayze both finished in double-digits; Leaphart with 16 points and Mayze with 14. Mayze had two three-pointers when the final buzzer sounded. Daishai Almond led the team with seven assists. Amber Landing recorded one block, which was enough to tie her for third all-time at Southern Miss for career blocks with 112.
It was the Cancer Awareness game for the Lady Eagles, wearing their pink uniforms for the second time in the month of February and sporting cancer ribbon shirts during warm ups with a pink and lavender ribbon to symbolize breast cancer and all types of cancer.
