
Softball Splits Games Against Mercer and Eastern Kentucky in Alabama State Tournament

Southern Miss defeated Mercer 10-1 and fell to Eastern Kentucky 1-0.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern Miss softball team (11-5) split games against Mercer (8-11) and Eastern Kentucky (15-2) on Saturday in the Alabama State Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.

Southern Miss defeated Mercer 10-1 in its first game of the day and dropped a 1-0 nail-biter to Eastern Kentucky in its second game of the day.

Southern Miss began its stint in the Alabama State Tournament on Saturday by capturing a victory over Mercer. The Golden Eagles banged out a total of 12 hits in the contest, and five were extra-base hits.

Senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin led the Golden Eagles' offense in the game. The Mobile, Ala. native went 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored, a double and a walk.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Makenna Pierce earned the start in the circle for the Golden Eagles and tossed a complete game. The Daphne, Ala. native scattered three hits, allowed one run (earned), issued three walks and struck out five, marking one of the best performances of her Southern Miss career.

Pierce (3-0) earned the win while Mercer starting pitcher Bailey Pattison (5-3) suffered the loss.

T1 – Borden roped a two-run double to left center that scored Rayner and Sumerlin (Southern Miss – 2, Mercer – 0).
T1 – Brown ripped a single up the middle, plating Borden (Southern Miss – 3, Mercer – 0).
T3 – Sumerlin scored on a wild pitch (Southern Miss – 4, Mercer – 0).
T4 – Rayner homered to right center (Southern Miss – 5, Mercer – 0).
B4 – Sophie Sumner produced a sacrifice fly to right center that allowed Abby Walsh to score (Southern Miss – 5, Mercer – 1).
T5 – Freshman utility player/catcher Caroline Worrell tallied a pinch-hit single to center field that drove in redshirt junior outfielder Amber Pack (Southern Miss – 6, Mercer – 1).
T6 – Davis singled, and then advanced to second base on the throw. Sumerlin and Pack scored (Southern Miss – 8, Mercer – 1).  Â
T7 – Brown reached on a throwing error that also allowed freshman second baseman Maddie Vasquez and Sumerlin to score (Southern Miss – 10, Mercer – 1).

Southern Miss' second game of the day proved to be a pitcher's duel as scoring opportunities were limited for both teams.

The Golden Eagles' best scoring opportunity of the game came in the top of the first inning when Sumerlin reached base after singling through the left side, and then advanced to third base on a Mercer fielding error that allowed Hannah Borden to reach base, but a strikeout ended the inning before Southern Miss could push any runs across the plate.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher and Kiln, Miss. native Kaylan Ladner drew the start in the circle for Southern Miss and pitched well. Ladner threw a complete game in which she limited Eastern Kentucky to five hits and one run over the course of her 6.2 innings pitched. Ladner also issued two walks and struck out three.

Eastern Kentucky relief pitcher Mollie Paulick (6-1) was credited with the win and Ladner (2-3) took the loss.
