
Softball Splits Games on Final Day of Alabama State Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Southern Miss softball team (12-6) split games against Mercer (9-12) and Alabama State (7-13) on the final day of the Alabama State Tournament held at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex in Montgomery, Ala.

Southern Miss fell to Mercer 5-2 in its first game of the day, and then bounced back by capturing a 10-2 victory over Alabama State in its second game of the day.

Game 1 – Southern Miss 2, Mercer 5
Senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin manufactured Southern Miss' runs in the contest. Sumerlin put Southern Miss on top 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning after smashing a two-run home run over the left field fence. The Mobile, Ala. native went two-for-two in the game with a run scored, two runs batted in, a home run, and two walks.

Senior right-handed pitcher Bailie Springfield and sophomore right-handed pitchers Kaylan Ladner and Makenna Pierce all saw action in the game.

Springfield earned the start and pitched 2.0 innings before Ladner took over in relief. In 2.0 innings pitched, Springfield allowed six hits, three runs (all earned), and struck out one.

After entering the game in relief in the top of the third inning, Ladner tossed 4.0 innings and surrendered four hits, two runs, and logged four strikeouts.

Pierce came on in the top of the seventh inning in relief of Ladner, and retired the side in order.

Mercer starting pitcher Amber Byrd (4-3) was credited with the win and Springfield (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season.

- Davis posted her sixth multi-RBI game this season. Davis is now tied with Borden for the most multi-RBI games produced by a Southern Miss player in 2020.
- Rayner collected her second home run of the season after belting a two-run shot to left center in the top of the fifth inning.
- Rayner extended her hitting streak to 10 games, which is currently the longest active hitting streak on the Golden Eagles' squad.
