Softball Set to Compete in Alabama State Tournament Over the Weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (10-4) will travel to Montgomery, Ala. to compete in the Alabama State Tournament this weekend. The tournament will be played at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on the campus of Alabama State.

The Last Time on the Diamond
The last time that the Golden Eagles were in action, they swept Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Wednesday (Feb. 25) night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

Southern Miss captured a 6-2 come-from-behind victory in game one and a 9-1 decision in game two. Game two came to an end in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the run rule.

Noteworthy Moments vs. Alcorn State (Game 1)

After collecting two RBIs in the game, redshirt junior right fielder Amber Pack posted her fifth multi-RBI game of the season. Pack's five multi-RBI games are the most multi-RBI games recorded by any Golden Eagle in 2020.
Sophomore right-handed Makenna Pierce lowered her ERA to 1.47 which is currently the lowest ERA on the Southern Miss pitching staff.

Noteworthy Moments vs. Alcorn State (Game 2)

Pack belted her fourth home run of the season and now leads the Southern Miss softball team in home runs for the 2020 season.
Sophomore left fielder Madison Rayner tallied her fifth triple of the season, currently marking the most triples recorded by any player in NCAA Division I softball during the 2020 season.
Junior first baseman Karley Nichols logged her first triple of the season.
Junior third baseman Alyssa "Tata" Davis extended her hitting streak to eight games, marking the longest active hitting streak on the Golden Eagles' squad.
Senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin was the Golden Eagle responsible for producing the game-ending base knock in the bottom of the sixth inning that ended the game due to the run rule.
Freshman catcher Hannah Borden extended her on-base streak to a team best 14 games.
Senior right-handed pitcher Bailie Springfield saw her win/loss record improve to 3-0, currently marking the best record on the Southern Miss pitching staff.

Breaking Down the All-Time Records
Southern Miss holds an unblemished 4-0 record in the all-time series against Mercer. Southern Miss is 1-0 when facing Mercer on the road in Macon, Ga. and 3-0 when playing them at a neutral site. Southern Miss has never hosted Mercer in Hattiesburg.

Southern Miss leads the all-time series against Eastern Kentucky 1-0. The lone matchup occurred at a neutral site.

Southern Miss currently sports a perfect 8-0 all-time series record against Alabama State. Southern Miss is 6-0 when hosting Alabama State at home in Hattiesburg and 2-0 in matchups played on the road in Montgomery, Ala. The two softball programs have never met at a neutral site.

The Last Meetings
The last time that Southern Miss and Mercer met on the softball diamond was on February 14, 2010 at the Sunshine State Classic hosted by Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. Southern Miss won the game by a final score of 9-1.

In its only meeting against Eastern Kentucky which occurred on February 15, 2008 as part of the Kennesaw State Tournament hosted by Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga., Southern Miss defeated Eastern Kentucky 7-2.

The last matchup between Southern Miss and Alabama State took place on March 13, 2019 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex in Montgomery, Ala. Southern Miss shutout Alabama State 5-0 in the contest.

The Opponents
Mercer kicked off its stint in the Alabama State Tournament earlier today against Nicholls State and dropped the contest 5-4. With the loss, the Bears are now 8-9 on the season.

Eastern Kentucky also began play in the Alabama State Tournament earlier today and picked up a pair of wins against Nicholls State and Alabama State. Eastern Kentucky captured a 4-2 win over Nicholls State and then shutout Alabama State 6-0. The Colonels own a 14-2 record for the season.

Alabama State was shutout by Eastern Kentucky 6-0 in its first game of the Alabama State Tournament earlier today and is scheduled to play Mercer later tonight. The Lady Hornets are currently 6-10 on the season.
