
Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Alcorn State

The Golden Eagles defeated the Lady Braves 6-2 in game one and 9-1 in game two.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (10-4) swept Alcorn State (5-14) in Wednesday night's doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

Southern Miss took a 6-2 decision in game one and a 9-1 decision in game two. Game two ended in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the run rule.

In game one, the Golden Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start offensively, but rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to capture a come-from-behind victory over the Lady Braves.

The turning point in the game for Southern Miss came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Amber Pack delivered a go-ahead two-run double down the right field line that drove in Madison Rayner and Caroline Casey. Pack's double gave Southern Miss a 3-2 lead.

Savanna Wood earned the start in the circle for Southern Miss and pitched 2.1 innings before giving way to Makenna Pierce. In 2.1 innings pitched, Wood allowed seven hits, two runs, two earned runs, did not issues any walks and struck out two.

After entering the game in relief in the top of the third inning, Pierce went on to toss a dominate 4.2 innings. The sophomore right-hander did not allow any hits or runs, walked three and tallied five strikeouts.

Pierce showed solid command in the circle throughout the night, but her command was amplified when she entered the game in the top of the third inning and inherited a bases-loaded jam with one out, and pitched her way out of it without any damage done.

Pierce (2-0) collected the win and Alcorn State starting pitcher Ambria Dorsey (2-5) suffered the loss.

Offensively, Nichols led the Golden Eagles in the game. The junior first baseman went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a triple.

Senior right-handed pitcher Bailie Springfield drew the start in the circle for the Golden Eagles and went the distance. Over the span of the 6.0 innings that she pitched, Springfield scattered five hits, allowed one run (earned), issued three walks and struck out four of the Lady Braves that she faced.

Springfield (3-0) earned the win and Alcorn State starter Brenn Ursin (2-5) was hooked with the loss.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 29) when they begin play in the Alabama State Tournament in Montgomery, Ala. The tournament will be hosted by Alabama State at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

On Saturday, Southern Miss will take on Mercer (8-8) at 9:00 a.m. and Eastern Kentucky (12-2) at 11:30 a.m. On Sunday, Southern Miss square off against Mercer at 9:00 a.m. and Alabama State (6-9) at 1:00 p.m.

- Pierce lowered her ERA to 1.47 which is currently the lowest ERA on the Southern Miss pitching staff.
- B1 | Borden doubled down the left field line and Rayner scored (Southern Miss – 1, Alcorn State – 0).
- T2 | Desirea Lindsey tripled to left center which allowed Alexsis Ramirez and Ashley Arnold to cross the plate (Alcorn State – 2, Southern Miss – 1).
- B6 | Pack ripped a double down the right field line, scoring Rayner and Casey (Southern Miss – 3, Alcorn State – 2).
- B6 | Alyssa "Tata" Davis laced a single to center field that scored Pack and Brown (Southern Miss – 5, Alcorn State – 2).
- B6 | Heather Hill capped off the scoring in the game with a single to center field that plated Davis (Southern Miss – 6, Alcorn State – 2).
