
Women's Tennis Falls in Road Test at Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Southern Miss' (5-1, 0-0 C-USA) perfect start came to an end Friday afternoon at Northwestern State (6-3, 0-0 Southland). The Lady Demons mounted a comeback in order to upend the Women's Tennis team by a 4-2 score in Natchitoches, La.
The Golden Eagles quickly faced an early test when Monique Burton and Sarah Medik got blanked by Northwestern State's top pair of Emilija Dancetovic and Ela Iwaniuk. Arina Amaning and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan held down the third pairing by holding off a feisty Northwestern State duo, edging them by a 7-5 score. Southern Miss was able to secure the doubles point after Katia de la Garza and Warisara Lee defeated Mariella Minetti and Patrycja Polanska in a 7-6(4) tiebreaker.
With the early lead in the hands of Southern Miss, Northwestern State quickly responded to erase the deficit. The Lady Demons managed to win four singles matches to secure their sixth win of the season. Yazgan was the lone Golden Eagle to grab a singles win after defeating Olivia Alfredsson on court five. The sophomore won 6-0, 6-1. Medik went unfinished on court three after dropping the first set.
The Golden Eagles finished two wins shy of tying a program-best 7-0 start. Today's loss drops Southern Miss to 5-1 as they head into its first Conference USA battle tomorrow. The Golden Eagles will stay in Natchitoches for an 11 a.m. contest against UTSA at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex.
