
Baseball Continues Season-Opening Homestand with UNO Tuesday

Tuesday, Feb. 18 – LH Kyle Khachadourian vs. RH Tyler Spring, GS (transfer), 6 pm
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss continues its season-opening homestand, Tuesday, Feb. 18, when they entertain New Orleans in a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles opened the season last weekend with three victories over Murray State, beginning their sixth-straight season with a three-game sweep.
Southern Miss plays a New Orleans team the won one of three games in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans. After dropping decisions to Southern (9-3) and Grambling (5-1), the Privateers ended the weekend with a 10-2 win over Prairie View A&M.
Sophomore Charlie Fischer (Edina, Minn.) led the way for the Golden Eagles with seven hits in 10 at bats in the three wins, also reaching base over his last eight plate appearances. Senior Matthew Guidry (Hattiesburg, Miss.) extended his streak of reaching base to 59 consecutive games over the weekend.
Gabe Montenegro, a junior from Guatemala City, Guatemala, posted a .333 average with a couple of singles and two RBI. Montenegro missed much of the second game of the set after getting hit by a pitch on the wrist in his first at bat, but came back to start the final game of the series.
Over the opening weekend, the Golden Eagle pitching staff posted a 2.00 team earned run average and got quality starts from both sophomore Gabe Shepard and senior Walker Powell. The staff registered 26 strikeouts and only five walks and the relief corps picked up two of the three victories.
Southern Miss and UNO split a pair of games last season, with the Golden Eagles losing in Hattiesburg 2-1 on Feb. 26, while capturing a 15-2 decision in New Orleans on April 24. Southern Miss leads the overall series 57-51.
Following the UNO game, the Golden Eagles complete their season-opening homestand with Central Arkansas over the weekend (6 p.m., 2 p.m., 1 p.m.).
Promotions Schedule:
UNO – Student Appreciation Day, where there will be seven innings of winning for Golden Eagle students only. It will also be a baseball bingo night.
