Softball Falls to Southeast Missouri State and Purdue Fort Wayne in the Troy Tournament

Southern Miss will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 16) when they take on Eastern Illinois at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
TROY, Ala. – The Southern Miss softball team (4-3) was defeated by Southeast Missouri State (3-1) and Purdue Fort Wayne (1-6) on Saturday in the Troy Tournament by scores of 7-0 and 7-5 respectively.

In its first game of the day, Southern Miss went toe-to-toe with Southeast Missouri State in a pitchers' duel that lasted until the Redhawks broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. Southeast Missouri State scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Claudia Gallo, a two-run single by Ashley Ellis, a one-run single by Anna Griffin and a Southern Miss error.

Southeast Missouri State extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Ellis homered down the right field line.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kaylan Ladner earned the start for Southern Miss in the circle. Ladner pitched two innings before giving way to freshman right-hander Savanna Wood. In two innings pitched, Ladner surrendered two hits, issued two walks, struck out three and did not allow any runs.

Wood (2-1) tossed four innings and allowed seven hits, seven runs (six earned), issued three walks, recorded three strikeouts and suffered the loss.

Paytience Holman (1-1) went the distance for Southeast Missouri State and earned the win.

In its second game of the day, Southern Miss fell to Purdue Fort Wayne after the Mastodons exploded for five runs in the fifth inning.

Southern Miss jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning after junior third baseman Alyssa "Tata" Davis launched a three-run home run over the left field fence.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning after sophomore left fielder Madison Rayner grounded out to the pitcher, and sophomore right fielder Caroline Casey scored on the play.

Purdue Fort Wayne cut the scoring deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth inning after Madelin Swart and Olivia Stansbury notched back-to-back solo home runs, making the score 4-2.

Purdue Fort Wayne took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Lexi Smalarz drew a bases loaded walk, Swart was hit by a pitch, Alaina White sent a two-run single to right center field and Bailie Springfield threw a wild pitch.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Breley Boykin (0-1) suffered the loss for Southern Miss and Shaina Eyre (1-1) picked up the win for Purdue Fort Wayne.

Boykin pitched one inning, surrendered one hit, allowed five runs (all earned), issued four walks and struck out two.

- Davis' three-run home run in the top of the third inning marked her first home run of the season.
- Casey earned her first start of the season for Southern Miss. Casey started the game against Purdue Fort Wayne as the Golden Eagles' right fielder.
- Casey registered the first triple of her Southern Miss career after tallying a leadoff triple in the top of the fourth inning in Southern Miss' game against Purdue Fort Wayne.
