
Softball Captures Wins Over Jackson State and Arkansas – Pine Bluff in the Michelle Short Memorial Classic on Saturday

The Golden Eagles scored a total of 35 runs on the day.
Senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin drove in the first two runs of the game for the Golden Eagles after drilling a triple down the right field line in the top of the first inning that allowed sophomore left fielder Madison Rayner and freshman second baseman Maddie Vasquez to score.
Freshman catcher Hannah Borden immediately followed with a single through the left side that allowed Sumerlin to score, extending Southern Miss' lead to 4-0 in the top of the first inning.
In the top of the third inning, Borden smashed a three-run home run over the center field fence, pushing the Golden Eagles' lead to 6-0. In addition to Borden, Rayner and Sumerlin were the other two Golden Eagles that scored on the home run.
Two at-bats after Borden's home run, junior center fielder Destini Brown homered to left field, making the score 8-0. Aside from Brown, freshman outfielder Caroline Worrell scored on the home run.
Sophomore right fielder Caroline Casey knocked in Southern Miss' last third inning run after laying down a perfect bunt that allowed junior third baseman Alyssa "Tata" Davis to score.
Southern Miss plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning via three consecutive doubles by Davis, junior first baseman Karley Nichols and Casey.
Davis started the string of doubles by ripping one down the left field line which allowed Borden and Brown to cross the plate. Nichols then doubled to left field, scoring Davis and Casey wrapped things up by lacing one down the right field line that scored junior infielder Jamie Powell.
Jackson State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning after a Southern Miss error allowed Glendolin Watson to score.
Southern Miss tallied its 14th and final run of the game after Sumerlin roped a double to left center field that plated redshirt junior second baseman Heather Hill.
Jackson State scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a pair of ground outs by Madelyn Prukop and Alexis Arrendondo that scored Kaitlyn Elzie and Ariana Cruz respectively.
Senior right-handed pitcher Bailie Springfield (2-0) drew the start, and went the distance in the circle for the Golden Eagles. In five innings pitched, Springfield surrendered seven hits, three runs, two earned runs, issued one walk, struck out one and earned the win.
Jackson State starter Leah Hopson (1-2) suffered the loss.

- The Golden Eagles collected a season-high 17 hits in the contest.
- Rayner batted in the leadoff spot for the first time this season.
- Sumerlin's triple in the top of the first inning marked her first of the season.
- After notching a home run each, Borden and Brown now have two home runs a piece on the season, making them tied for the most home runs on the Southern Miss squad.
- Davis registered a pair of doubles in the game, marking the first time that she has done so in a single game this season.
- Casey's fourth inning double marked her first of the season.
Rayner scored the Golden Eagles' first run of the game after crossing the plate on a wild pitch and then Vasquez scored after Brown was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
An infield single by Davis that scored Sumerlin, produced the third run of the inning for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss' fourth and fifth runs of the inning came after Worrell drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed Borden to score, and Brown scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore catcher Bre Blankenship produced the sixth and seventh runs of the inning for the Golden Eagles after smashing a two-run single to center field, scoring Davis and Worrell.
A bases-loaded walk issued to Vasquez plated sophomore utility player Kaitlyn Passeau, extending Southern Miss' lead to 8-0 and a ground out by Sumerlin that scored Blankenship made the score 9-0.
A two-run double to left center from the bat of Borden that brought Rayner and Vasquez home pushed the Southern Miss lead to 11-0.
Worrell then roped a single that scored Brown, making the score 12-0.
Southern Miss collected its 13th run after Davis scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles notched their 14th and final run of the inning after redshirt senior outfielder Beth Taylor walked with the bases loaded and Worrell scored.
Arkansas Pine – Bluff scored three runs in the top of the second inning via back-to-back solo home runs by Samaria Jackson and Leslie Arreola and a sacrifice fly by Faith Santa Cruz that scored Deeanna Harrington.
Southern Miss added one run to its lead in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly to left field from Powell that scored Hill.
In the top of the third inning, Arkansas – Pine Bluff benefited from a Southern Miss error that allowed Harli Rodgers to score.
Southern Miss tacked on four additional runs in the bottom of the third inning, extending its lead to 19-5.
Taylor accounted for the Golden Eagles first run of the fifth inning after scoring on a wild pitch and then Borden lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Vasquez.
Fruge put the Golden Eagles' 18th run of the game on the scoreboard after stroking a triple to left field that drove in Hill.
Powell produced Southern Miss' 19th run of the game via a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Fruge home.
Southern Miss added two runs to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning courtesy of a triple to left field by Vasquez that scored Passeau and a double to right field by Hill that scored Vasquez.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Makenna Pierce (1-0) who entered the game in the top of the third inning for starter Breley Boykin, was credited with the win. Pierce tossed three innings and did not allow a hit or a run. Additionally, she issued one walk and punched out eight.
Arkansas – Pine Bluff starter Brianna Schwan (0-1) was hooked with the loss.

- Southern Miss scored a season-high 21 runs in the game.
- Boykin's start versus Arkansas – Pine Bluff marked the first of her Southern Miss career.
- Blankenship's two-run single in the bottom of the first inning marked her first hit of the season.
- Worrell's first inning single marked the first hit of her Southern Miss career.
- Fruge's fifth inning triple marked her first hit of the season.
- Vasque's triple that came in the bottom of the fifth inning will go down as the first triple of her Southern Miss career.
- Pierce recorded her first win of the season.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 23) morning. Southern Miss will square off against Morehead State (3-3) at 9:00 a.m. and wrap things up with a 1:30 p.m. matchup against Central Arkansas (9-4).
