Lady Eagles Begin Conference Play Against LA Tech

The Lady Eagles and Lady Techsters will meet at 4 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball begin Conference USA play to start out the 2020 portion of their season on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Techsters both start the C-USA slate with records of 8-3. Southern Miss comes off a win against Faulkner at home, winning 71-59 on Dec. 28. The Lady Techsters are also coming to Reed Green after a win, 67-54 over Arkansas State on their home court.
Southern Miss and LA Tech both own winning records on their respective home courts, with the Lady Eagles defeating the Lady Techsters 4-2 when in Reed Green and 3-7 in Ruston. In the C-USA era, Southern Miss is 7-8 against LA Tech. The Lady Techsters own the series by a slim margin of 9-7 overall. Underneath Coach McNelis, the Lady Eagles are 7-7 against LA Tech.
The Lady Techsters are led by Head Coach Brooke Stoehr, who is in her fourth year at LA Tech, her eighth year as a head coach overall. Stoehr previously served as an Assistant Coach for the Lady Eagles with Joye Lee-McNelis, spending the 2008-09 season in Hattiesburg.
Starting the Conference slate with LA Tech is not new for the Lady Eagles, as they have met the Lady Techsters four previous times to start C-USA play, all in a row. In the 2013-14 season, the Lady Eagles saw a win in Ruston, 67-56. In the 2014-15 season, they did it again, this time in overtime, 79-77. They made it three wins in a row, this time at home, with a 69-59 win in 2015-16. In 2016-17 they returned to Ruston, but fell 61-72. Southern Miss looks to regain the win in the Conference opener on Saturday. Louisiana Tech has actually started their Conference slate against Southern Miss five times in their seven years as a member of C-USA. LA Tech is 2-4 in C-USA openers, where Southern Miss is 11-13.
In Conference play, the Lady Eagles hold an all-time record of 284-249 in both the Metro Conference and Conference USA. In C-USA alone, they are 182-196. Coach McNelis has a Conference record of 125-120 with the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles continue to be led by senior guard Shonte Hailes in points, as she has raked in 185 points so far this season. Kelsey Jones and Daishai Almond continue to hold their positions as category leaders in rebounds and assists, respectively. Jones is up to 59 rebounds and Almond has 40 assists. For the Lady Techsters, they are led by Keiunna Walker with 120 points, Anna Larr Roberson with 70 rebounds, and Raizel Guinto with 34 assists. The Lady Techsters lost their top two scorers from last year's squad to graduation, including Kierra Anthony and Taylor Stahly.Â
