FORT WORTH, Texas – A rivalry between two schools some 90-plus miles apart gets revisited Saturday under the Texas sun when Southern Miss and Tulane participate in the 17th annual Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
The contest takes place at Amon G. Carter Stadium on the TCU campus, beginning at 10:30 a.m., and both teams will be playing in the "Battle for the Bell." ESPN will carry the game and it can also be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network presented by Learfield IMG College as well as through the Southern Miss Game Day app.
The teams play for the first time since 2010 when they were both members of Conference USA. While Tulane did not leave the league until after the 2013 season, the two schools were in different divisions and did not play their final three years in the conference.
Southern Miss leads the overall series 23-7, having won the last six meetings between the two schools including a 46-30 triumph on Nov. 6, 2010, in New Orleans in the last matchup between them.
This game marks the first time the two teams will play at a neutral site as the first 30 games were split equally at each respective school's city with 15 games each.
The series dates back to the 1979 season with the Green Wave collecting a 20-19 decision at M.M. Roberts Stadium and renewed each season through 2006.
Saturday's matchup marks the first game for the Golden Eagles at TCU since playing the Horned Frogs during the 2004 campaign, when they were a member of C-USA. This will be the third trip to the Lone Star state for the Golden Eagles this season as the program has won their last three games in Texas.
The game marks the second latest date that the Golden Eagles played in their 103-year history, with the latest being the 2007 GMAC Bowl on Jan. 7, at the conclusion of the 2006 season in which the Golden Eagles won 28-7 over Ohio. In fact, this will be the sixth time Southern Miss will have played football in the month of January.
