HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss football coach Blake Anderson liked the energy he saw from his team Wednesday morning following the team's 12th practice of fall camp.
The Golden Eagles went over two hours on another hot, summer south Mississippi morning at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
"It was a good recovery from them as we struggled a little bit in that area yesterday," said first-year Golden Eagle coach Blake Anderson. "We challenged them a little bit as we gave them a 'Come To Jesus' meeting this morning.
"They responded. It was hot, guys were sore, but the energy from both sides was good. They responded the right way."
As the Golden Eagles continue to get ready for their second preseason scrimmage Saturday at 11 a.m., as part of Fan Fest, Anderson said that the practice approach was going to be a little different this week and aimed at being more like a normal game week routine.
That routine features a 'non-sweat' Thursday practice which will involve walk-throughs and a lot of mental work, before ramping things back up on Friday which includes a lot of pace and timing before getting to the scrimmage on Saturday.
"We built this week like a game week for the season," said Anderson. "It's a new approach for most of these guys, even for most of the guys coming back (from last season). We adjusted the schedule a little bit compared to what Coach Huff did last year."
Anderson went on to acknowledge that it was a little bit different than in previous fall camps as a head coach, but said with the amount of new players, over 70 on the roster, he felt it was important to go used to this process in getting ready for games this season.
Southern Miss opens the 2026 season, Saturday, Sept. 5, at home against Alcorn State at 4 p.m.
Tickets for the season opener, as well as the other five Golden Eagle home contests, in the forms of season, flex plans, as well as single game ticket options, can be purchased by going online at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
