HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss football coach Blake Anderson met with the media Tuesday following its morning practice and reviewed last Saturday's first preseason scrimmage, expressing encouragement by what he saw after review of the video tape.
"There was good on both sides and there was plenty to teach from," Anderson said. "It was a great scrimmage in that sense for us that it was really good, solid video to teach off of.
"The most pleasing (thing) for me was, as hot as it was, I didn't hear one comment about the heat. I didn't hear one guy gripe or complain and, for the most part, it was relatively good effort. We got tired late, but we still were chasing and running and working late. A capacity to work and a willingness to work gives us a chance to improve."
Golden Eagle quarterback Ethan Hampton, who is battling for the top spot at quarterback, left the scrimmage after the first series with a contusion on his throwing right hand. Anderson said that he was a little bit better today and threw about 20-25 yards.
"(His hand) is structurally fine and now he is dealing with soreness and swelling," said Anderson. "He'll be fine. I'd like to think he will be ready by Saturday (for the team's second scrimmage). I don't know if that is optimistic or not."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice fields for practice No. 12 of fall camp on Wednesday.
Southern Miss opens the 2026 season, Saturday, Sept. 5, at home against Alcorn State at 4 p.m.
Tickets for the season opener, as well as the other five Golden Eagle home contests, in the forms of season, flex plans, as well as single game ticket options, can be purchased by going online at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
