
Lady Eagles Drop 77-69 Decision to Middle Tennessee

Four of the five Southern Miss starters had a double-digit night.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's basketball team fell at the hands of Middle Tennessee on Saturday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum, 77-69. Four out of the five Lady Eagle starters scored in double-digits, and saw a double-double out of redshirt sophomore Kelsey Jones.
Southern Miss (11-7, 3-4) started neck-and-neck with the Lady Raiders (13-7, 5-3), scoring 14 points to Middle Tennessee's 15 in the first quarter. Both teams scored six points in the paint, and Southern Miss scored four off of fast breaks while MT scored eight off USM's 10 turnovers. In the second quarter, the Lady Eagles couldn't stop the Lady Raiders, finishing the frame 13-21. In the first half overall, Middle Tennessee had three 3-pointers fall, with Charity Savage scoring 11 points. Alarie Mayze had a hot half, scoring nine points and going 4-for-5 from the floor. Shonte Hailes had five assists over the two frames. Middle led into the half, 36-27.
The second half started with a good layup from Respect Leaphart. At the end of the quarter, Southern Miss scored 12 points in the paint and had eight fast break points. Despite the work put in by the Lady Eagles, the Lady Raiders led by 14 with one minute to go, and then after a good jumper by Kelsey Jones stopped the run, the Raiders led by 15 going into the fourth. During the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles went out on a hot streak. USM put up 30 points in that final frame, the most they had put up in the fourth this season. Southern Miss put up 11 points off of the Raiders seven turnovers, and 16 points in the paint.
The Lady Eagles were led by senior Shonte Hailes in scoring with 21 points, the fifth time she's put up 20 points this season. Along with that, she was just shy of a double-double as she had eight rebounds. She also led in assists with six and in steals with three. Hailes had two 3-pointers and she was just one minute shy of playing a full 40. Kelsey Jones had her second double-double of the season after leading in rebounds with 10 and putting up 15 points. She had a career-high in blocks with four. Alarie Mayze also had a good showing, putting up 16 points and dishing out five assists. Respect Leaphart finished out the double-figure scoring for the starters with 15 points.

The Lady Eagles will hit the road and will play just their seventh away game of the season, this time with a road swing at Old Dominion and Charlotte. The Lady Eagles will play the Monarchs on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
