Lady Eagles Can't Overcome UAB

Despite a comeback in the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles couldn't overtake the Blazers.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball made a comeback in the fourth quarter, but in the end couldn't overtake UAB and fell 74-68 on Thursday night in Reed Green.
The Lady Eagles (11-6, 3-3) fell to UAB (12-7, 4-3) but was led by senior Shonte Hailes who finished with 22 points, six rebounds and three assists.
UAB had an early lead in the first quarter, jumping out to a 6-2 run. After the first 10 minutes of the game expired, the Blazers had a 16-11 lead. To open the second quarter, Southern Miss scored two buckets thanks to Alarie Mayze. UAB scored seven points to whittle the time down to just one minute on the clock before Mayze and Hailes scored two to finish the quarter. The Blazers led 33-26 going into the half.
The third quarter saw renewed energy from Southern Miss as they hopped out to a 6-1 lead in the first two minutes. UAB's Rachael Childress hit back-to-back three pointers before the Lady Eagles answered with five points of their own from Hailes and a 3-point play from Respect Leaphart. Another nine point run from UAB in the middle of the quarter made it a 12 point lead for the Blazers, but were able to come back to finish the quarter by cutting their lead down to nine with four-straight points.
The tempo from the third carried over to the fourth for Southern Miss, who started with six points. UAB went on a 10-0 run with 3:24 left in the quarter. The Lady Eagles responded with three three-pointers, one being a four-point play from Shonte Hailes with 10 seconds left on the clock. The Blazers scored two free throws before the third three-pointer came from Hailes. A free throw from UAB's Myah Barnes finished the game.
