Lady Eagles Set to Battle the Blazers Thursday

The Blazers of UAB will head to Reed Green for a Thursday matchup, with tip set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball starts a short home swing on Thursday with UAB. Tip is set for 6 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Promotions
The Lady Eagles will kick off the height ticket promotion, "Taking the Lady Eagles to New Heights", announced by Southern Miss Athletics with Thursday's player being Shonte Hailes. Hailes stands at 5'6", so her ticket price will be $5.06. Tickets for the height promotion can be purchased here.Â
With students back on campus and class beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 22, there are multiple promotions for the student body on Thursday. The Student Eagle Club will be hosting a tailgate for members prior to the game and members can win prizes throughout the game. The first 100 Student Eagle Club members will get a free Chick-Fil-AÂ sandwiches. One lucky student will have the chance of winning $10,000 in a halftime series shootout, where that student will have to make a layup, free throw, three-pointer, and half court shot in 25 seconds to win.
Matchup
Southern Miss (11-5, 3-2) welcomes the UAB Blazers (11-7, 3-3) to Reed Green for their first matchup since January of 2019.
Overall, the Lady Eagles lead the series 40-23. The matchup with UAB is one of the most-played for Southern Miss, amounting to 63 overall. The only opponent the Lady Eagles have faced more is Tulane, with 68 games. In the C-USA era, USM and UAB have met 43 times, with a record of 25-18 in USM's favor. Southern Miss is 24-5 against UAB when playing on their home court of Reed Green Coliseum as well. Under Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, the Lady Eagles are 16-10 against the Blazers.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a Texas two-step trip where they defeated North Texas 65-57, and fell to Rice, 64-75. In that two-game road series, the Lady Eagles were led by senior Respect Leaphart. Against UNT, she posted 22 points and nine rebounds. In the game against Rice, she had 14 points and seven rebounds. Her senior counterpart Shonte Hailes had seven assists against the Mean Green, and Daishai Almond had seven against the Owls.
UAB had two games at home in Bartow Arena on Jan. 16 and Jan. 18, where they hosted the Florida schools. They defeated both of them, winning 71-58 against FIU and 92-73 against Florida Atlantic. Rachael Childress led in both games in scoring with 19 points against FIU and 23 against FAU. Angela Vendrell leads for the Blazers in assists and rebounds and did so in both games. Against FIU she had four assists and eight rebounds, and against the Owls she had 11 assists and five rebounds. The Blazers are led by head coach Randy Norton who is in his seventh season at the helm of the program. So far through the 2019-20 season, he has improved his career record to 128-80.
