Men's Tennis Starts Season with 7-0 Victory

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Southern Miss took its young squad down to the Crescent City and came away with a season-opening, 7-0 victory over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday afternoon.

Only Matthieu Peres had competed the previous spring for the Black and Gold, but the squad took to the new challenges in a big way. Hsiang Yi Wang showed great resolve in overcoming a first-set defeat, as did Alexander Gima in his two tie-breaker scenarios.

Of the six Golden Eagles to see action on Tuesday, four were freshmen.

"This was a real good day for us," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "Our young guys stepped up in every way, especially in back-and-forth battles that went down to the wire. The first one is out of the way, and now we can get back home to prepare for two more matches back-to-back this weekend."

Southern Miss now looks ahead to beginning its home slate this weekend, first against Alcorn State (Friday) and then Florida A&M (Saturday), each at 2 p.m.
