Southern Miss played well against the Owls but couldn't find the win.
HOUSTON, Texas – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball fell to Rice on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Tudor Fieldhouse, 75-64.
Southern Miss (11-5, 3-2) had managed to stay on pace with the Owls (11-6, 6-0), but the Owls overtook them in the fourth. Rice also played without Erica Ogwumike as she has been recovering from an injury.
The Lady Eagles and Owls both came rearing out of the gate and each put up 14 points in the first, but saw two lead changes and four ties en route. Southern Miss was able to convert some seven Rice turnovers into 10 points. Six of the Lady Eagles points came from sophomore guard Daishai Almond, who went 3-for-3 in that first frame. Alarie Mayze, Respect Leaphart, and Shonte Hailes all had one shot drop as well.
In that second quarter, the game continued to be neck-and-neck but USM managed to out-score them by one point. Rice and Southern Miss had a combined 13 turnovers in the frame, and had only 19 points overall because of it. Five lead changes finished in USM's favor, going into the half with the 24-23 lead.
Rice had 25 points to Southern Miss' 14 in the third quarter, and did much of it within the final five minutes. The Owls sprung into a 10-1 run to finish the quarter. The Lady Eagles saw a 3-pointer from Alarie Mayze during that run, but overall went 5-for-18 from the floor.
The Owls added 26 more points to seal the deal in the fourth. Rice's Nancy Mulkey put in some serious work in the fourth, posting 12 points on her six attempts. The Lady Eagles bounced back in the last three minutes, slicing the lead to 65-56, but Rice didn't let Southern Miss inch any closer. Much of that final comeback came behind sophomore Destiny Smith, who ended the day with a career-high 10 points and three steals. Southern Miss had 26 points in the quarter, but Rice led by as much as 16 points with six minutes to go.
