HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Former Southern Miss women's soccer player Brooke Hendrix made history after recently signing a contract with the NWSL's Washington Spirit, becoming the first Golden Eagle to ever sign a NWSL contract. Due to both the Spirit and the NWSL's policy, the terms of Hendrix's deal were not disclosed.

"It is a dream fulfilled to be able to come home and play professionally in America. I hope I can represent Southern Miss well and make everyone proud, SMTTT always!"
Hendrix was a member of the Southern Miss women's soccer program from 2011-2014 where she played both the forward and defensive center-mid positions and served as a team captain, something that she attributes to helping her to develop the leadership qualities needed to compete at the professional level. During her time with the Golden Eagles, the Sharpsburg, Ga. native appeared in a total of 71 matches and made 62 starts. She also recorded seven goals, 10 assists and 24 points.
Prior to signing with the Spirit, the 26-year-old most recently competed for the FA Women's Super League's West Ham United FC. Hendrix saw action in 35 matches during her two seasons with the club and became a part of history when she helped West Ham United FC advance to the 2019 Women's FA Cup Final in its first season as a member of FA Women's Super League.
Hendrix's other stops along the road to the NWSL include stints with the Serie A Women's side Brescia in Italy, the Scottish Women's Premier League's Rangers, the Swiss Nationalliga A side FC Staad, Úrvalsdeild Kvenna club Fylkir FC in Iceland and the former WPSL's Atlanta Silverbacks.
During her time with Brescia, Hendrix helped guide the club to a second-place league finish for the 2017-2018 season, a runner-up finish in the Coppa Italia, a Round of 16 Women's Champions League run and the club's 2017 Women's Super Cup win.
In addition to her accomplishments with Brescia, Hendrix also helped the Atlanta Silverbacks capture the WPSL Southeast Division title in 2016.
Hendrix will join a talented Washington Spirit squad that features U.S. Women's National Team members Mallory Pugh, Rose Lavelle and Andi Sullivan.
Southern Miss Head Women's Soccer Coach Mohammed El-Zare on Hendrix signing a contract with the Washington Spirit
"Brooke again shows the courage to challenge herself by crossing the ocean and never looking back at the shore. Her contributions will make a lasting impact on the club, the fans and U.S. soccer and I am excited to have her back home."
Washington Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke on the signing of Hendrix
"Brooke is someone we have been tracking for quite some time and we have been particularly impressed by a number of strong defensive performances at West Ham during the 2019-2020 WSL season. She is just the type of defender we have been looking to add to the squad and really fits the profile of players we want to bring to the club. She is a versatile and competitive defender and will certainly give us the option of looking at a different tactical set up this season. Brooke's arrival definitely raises the level of competition and she is someone I am very much looking forward to integrating into the squad quickly once she arrives."
