Women's Tennis Concludes Play at SMU Fall Invitational

DALLAS, Texas – The Southern Miss women's tennis team opened its fall campaign with statement wins at the SMU Fall Invitational. After three days of play in Dallas, the Golden Eagles are leaving with plenty of positives.
Arina Amaning cruised through the Mustang Draw to earn a spot in Sunday's finals. The junior won an epic battle against SMU's Katherine Jakeway in the semifinals. Amaning took the first set by a 7-6 score, but then fell in the second set. Needing to win the final set to advance, Amaning produced an 11-9 win. The France native would fall to Nicole Petchey in the finals after retiring in the second set due to injury.
Katia de la Garza was able to work her way through the back end of the Peruna Draw. De la Garza's first-round bye matched her up against Kansas State's Iona Gheorghita. Gheorghita would best the Golden Eagle sophomore with a tiebreaker in the second set. On Sunday morning, de la Garza knocked off Armelle Cerdan of Stephen F. Austin in the back-end finals, 7-5, 6-3.
Monique Burton and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan each lost their first-round matches on Friday, sending them to the back end of the bracket. Burton rounded out Sunday play for Southern Miss with a two-set win over Cerdan. The Australia native cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
In doubles play, Burton and de la Garza were the only pair to earn a victory. The two beat Hsu/Wong (KSU) on Saturday by a 6-4 score.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action next weekend at the West Florida Invitational. Play will kick off on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
