HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Southern Miss (0-13, 0-1 C-USA) women's volleyball team dropped its Conference USA opener at Marshall (10-4, 1-0 C-USA) in straight sets (16-25, 17-25, 16-25) on Friday night.
Despite the loss, both Kinsley Hanback and Katie Erdmann put up career-high kills in the Cam Henderson Center. Hanback smashed a career-high eight kills on 24 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage and Erdmann went for a team-high nine kills, besting her previous high of five.
The Thundering Herd jumped out to early leads in both of the first two sets and Southern Miss was unable to draw close enough to complete a comeback. The Golden Eagles pressured the Herd with an early lead in the third set, but the home team was able to pull away for the three-set win.
Kess Krutsinger added to her team-high 18 blocks with three block assists in her first C-USA contest as a Golden Eagle, while also adding six kills. Junior Piper Matsumoto tallied a game-high 25 assists and finished one dig shy of her fifth double-double. The 16 digs Madison Lawler produced marked the eighth time the junior has reached at least 10 digs this season.
The Golden Eagles will head to Western Kentucky for a Sunday matinee in Bowling Green. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. (CT).
