HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Golden Eagle women's golf team is handling its final preparations for the season-opening, Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. Monday's 36 holes will begin with a 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start (with continuous play into the second round), followed by an 8 a.m. CT final round on Tuesday.
The action will take place at the par-71, 5,900-yard Cherokee Golf Club. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.com.
The season opener was kind to the Black and Gold last season, as the squad kicked off head coach Lucy Nunn's tenure with a school-record 872 at the USA Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala. It broke the previous mark of 877 also set at the same course in September 2017. On another note, Southern Miss' last trip to East Tennessee saw the squad capture the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville in March 2016.
Golden Eagle representatives in the Volunteer State are Julie Baker, Friend Chompitakdacha, Cassidy Evreniadis, Tenley Moretti and Valeria Pichardo.Â
Moretti will make her Southern Miss debut after transferring from Iowa State, where she played in two tournaments as a freshman. Evreniadis is the squad's lone senior, and she played in eight tournaments last year after transferring from junior college. Her best event was a seventh-place showing at the FIU Pat Bradley, carding career-lows of a 71 in the second round and 215 overall.
Chompitakdacha arrived in January and proceeded to compete in all five tournaments to begin her collegiate career. Pichardo, a junior, will take part in her fifth-career tournament. Baker, also a junior, is playing in her 13th event, and last year posted back-to-back 71s in the Magnolia Invitational for a sixth-place finish.
Southern Miss will join Augusta, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Kent State, LSU, Maryland, Memphis, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, South Dakota State, the host Volunteers, UTSA and Tulane.
Kent State and Tennessee were picked seventh and 28th, respectively, in Golfweek's preseason rankings.
