
Lawler, Tuisamatatele Have Career Performances Despite Two Losses

STATESBORO, Ga. – With Ashley Chapman's career night against Louisiana on Tuesday, Madison Lawler and Kaile Tuisamatatele decided to have a coming out party of their own despite the Southern Miss (0-9, 0-0 C-USA) women's volleyball team dropping both contests at the Georgia Southern Invitational.
The Golden Eagles fell to Winthrop (13-25, 25-27, 21-25) and Georgia Southern (21-25, 16-25, 21-25) in straight sets in Statesboro, Ga.
Paired with 18 digs against Louisiana, Lawler's career-high 26 digs against Winthrop capped the best two-game stretch of her career. Tuisamatatele smacked a career-high six kills on a .357 hitting clip to lead the Golden Eagles in the nightcap against Georgia Southern. The Hawaiian also swatted four Georgia Southern attacks.
Chapman posted a team-high eight kills against Winthrop, tying her career-best that was set earlier in the week. Freshman Gillian Hidalgo, who has been a staple in the lineup this season for head coach Stephanie Radecki, tallied seven kills against Winthrop. Hidalgo also chipped in five kills against Georgia Southern, putting her five behind Ashley Berry for the most on the team this season.
Junior Piper Matsumoto added 55 assists on the day, the most in back-to-back matches for the Florida native. She also added three kills on a .375 hitting percentage in the against Georgia Southern.
The Golden Eagles will take on UNC Asheville at 9 a.m. (CT) on Saturday before heading home from the Georgia Southern Invitational.
