Golden Eagles Fall to UNC Asheville in Three Sets

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Southern Miss (0-10, 0-0 C-USA) women's volleyball team ended its Georgia Southern Invitational slate with a three-set (20-25, 22-25, 23-25) loss to UNC Asheville (5-4, 0-0 Big South) on Saturday morning.

The Golden Eagles used Piper Matsumoto's career day to keep the match close but were unable to complete a comeback in the matches final set. The junior dished out a season-high 33 assists and 11 digs in three sets. Linsey Legg and Ashley Chapman also added 20 digs each – a career high for both -- while Chapman also netted seven kills.

Offensively, Kess Krutsinger exploded for a career-high 11 kills on a .231 hitting percentage. In the third set, Southern Miss led by as many as five points at the halfway mark of the set after a Matsumoto kill. However, UNC Asheville used a late run to regain the lead and secure its fifth win of the season.

Eight different Golden Eagles recorded a kill, eight recorded a dig and five swatted a Bulldog attack. Southern Miss combined for a .151 hitting percentage and swung at a .192 clip in the first set – a game high for the team.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road for a midweek contest against Tulane on Wednesday. First serve in New Orleans is scheduled for 7 p.m.
