Redshirt sophomore forward Hailey Pohevitz led the Golden Eagles offense after registering the first goal of her Southern Miss career.
BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team fell to #24 LSU by a final score of 2-1 in Friday night's exhibition match at the LSU Soccer Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
The match remained scoreless until Southern Miss redshirt sophomore forward Hailey Pohevitz found the back of the net after finishing off a shot from redshirt senior defender Kaitlin Fayard that ricocheted off of the crossbar to put the Golden Eagles on top, 1-0. The goal marked the first of Pohevitz's Southern Miss career. The Van Nuys, Calif. native transferred to Southern Miss prior to the 2019 season after a stint at Cal State Fullerton.
The Golden Eagles nearly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after junior forward/defender Macie Pennington netted a goal but Pennington's goal was waved off due to an offside infraction.
Southern Miss maintained its 1-0 lead until LSU's Haley Garrett netted an equalizing goal with just under three minutes remaining in the second period.
Solid defense and goalkeeping by the Golden Eagles prevented the Tigers from taking the lead until the closing minutes when Meghan Johnson converted what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Southern Miss will now make preparations for its next match which will come against in-state rival Mississippi State. The match will take place at the MSU Soccer Field in Starkville, Miss. on Saturday, August 17 at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
