Volleyball Falls Twice on Final Day in Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The Southern Miss volleyball team fell twice in its final day of play at the Denver Classic. The Golden Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision to Denver in the morning and fell 3-0 to San Francisco in the night cap.

The Golden Eagles flew out to an early lead over the Pioneers, leading 5-2 early in the first set. Denver, a team that made the NCAA Tournament last season, was able to regain control of the tempo midway through.

The Pioneers used a 9-1 run to put the set out of reach, winning 25-15. Denver then took a two-set lead after winning the second set, 25-13. The Golden Eagles battled in the third set, taking the lead on several occasions, but couldn't hold on. Sparked by an Addie Ashton kill, the Golden Eagles used an 8-2 run to take a late lead. Denver went on a run of their own and took the final frame, 25-23.

Sophomore Kinsley Hanback posted a career-high six kills to lead the Golden Eagles offensively. Freshman Gillian Hidalgo and junior Jacoby Sims also posted six kills to lead the offense along with Hanback. Junior Piper Matsumoto paced the Golden Eagles with 16 assists and eight digs.

Southern Miss once again jumped to an early lead behind a strong start from Hidalgo. The California native had three kills in the first set, but the Golden Eagles fell, 25-20.

The Dons were able to take a two-set lead on the Golden Eagles after winning 25-18 behind a late rally. The Golden Eagles dropped the third set by a 25-16 score.

Senior Ashley Berry paced all Golden Eagle hitters with 12 kills, while Hidalgo and Ashton each had five kills. Junior Madison Lawler recorded 18 digs and one assist. Matsumoto notched 27 assists and 13 digs, her first double-double of the weekend.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action next weekend when they host the Southern Miss Classic. Southern Miss will take on Arkansas State at 6 p.m. on Friday.
