Southern Miss Homers Three Times in Series-Opening Win at Rice
HOUSTON – Matt Wallner, Danny Lynch and Gabe Montenegro all homered to lead Southern Miss to a 6-3 series-opening victory over Rice Friday afternoon at Reckling Park.
The Golden Eagles (32-15 overall, 19-6 C-USA) kept pace with Florida Atlantic with the victory as they have five league contests left to play. Southern Miss opened the day with a one game advantage.
On the mound, Walker Powell limited the Owls (21-28, 13-13 C-USA) to only two runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 6-2 on the year.
After not getting a hit over the first two innings off of Rice ace Matt Canterino, Will McGillis started the third with a walk. After a flyout, Matt Guidry doubled to the left-center gap to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Hunter Slater then followed with a RBI groundout to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
Wallner then extended the visitors' advantage with a long home run to right to start the fourth, giving him 15 for the year and No. 50 for his career. The homer tied Wallner with Jeff Cook for the second-most number of home runs in a Golden Eagle career.
After the Owls came back to tie the game on a two-run single by Aaron Beaulaurier in the fifth, Southern Miss answered right back with three runs in the sixth. Canterino walked both Bryant Bowen and Wallner to open the frame. After a sacrifice bunt by Cole Donaldson, Hunter LeBlanc singled in both runners with a liner to left-center.
Lynch then followed later in the frame with his first career home run that bounced high off the scoreboard in the right-centerfield to make the score 5-2.
Canterino got chased after LeBlanc's single as he surrendered four runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 6-5.
Montenegro added a leadoff solo homer in the ninth for his fourth of the year and the Owls registered back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the ninth with the second one from Bradley Gneiting to score a run and cut into the final gap.
The Owls outhit the Golden Eagles 9-7 in the contest, but Southern Miss turned a season-high four double plays in the game. It was the first time that they had turned that many since the 2017 Hattiesburg Regional.
The game was moved up to the afternoon to try and avoid rain that was expected later in the event.
The series continues with a 2 p.m., single contest Saturday.
