HOUSTON – Left-hander Evan Kravetz and Kendel Jefferies limited Southern Miss to just three hits while the Golden Eagles struck out 13 times and grounded into three double plays as Rice collected a 4-0 victory Saturday night at Reckling Park to even the Conference USA series.
The Golden Eagles (32-16 overall, 19-7 C-USA) were blanked for the first time since a 3-0 decision at Alabama on March 7, 2018.
Gabe Montenegro led the Golden Eagles with two singles and Hunter Slater added a double for the visitors' only hits. The team added seven walks off Rice pitching but grounded into one of double plays with the bases loaded in the eighth to end the inning and ended Southern Miss' best threat of the contest.
Kravetz limited the Golden Eagles to the three hits and four walks over 7 1/3 inning with 10 strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 5-2 on the campaign. Jefferies walked three over the final 1 2/3 to collect his fifth save of the year.
Behind two hits from Trei Cruz and Braden Comeaux, the Owls (22-28, 13-13) got on the board with a two-run homer in the first inning off of Stevie Powers. The homer was courtesy of Cruz, who drilled his eighth of the season.
Comeaux then collected a RBI single off of Powers in the fifth, before Andrew Dunlap added a sacrifice fly in the eight for the Owls' final run.
Powers allowed three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings with no walks and five strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-4.
The game was played four hours later than originally scheduled due to rain in the Houston area earlier in the day.
The two teams play the series deciding game, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
