HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Arguably the biggest week of the regular season begins Wednesday for the Southern Miss baseball team as they open a four-game homestand with in-state rival Ole Miss at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The Golden Eagles, which rejoined the rankings with a No. 29 spot in the Collegiate Baseball poll, bring an eight-game winning streak into the affair as they are currently tied for the third longest in the country. Southern Miss, which also leads Conference USA, welcomes second-place Florida Atlantic to town this weekend for a three-game league series as they look to increase their two-game lead on the Owls.
Southern Miss (29-13) looks to snap another streak, having lost the last five games to Ole Miss, including an 11-2 decision to the Rebels at Trustmark Park in Pearl on April 9. The Golden Eagles, though, have won three of the last four games over Ole Miss (30-15) at Pete Taylor Park.
Offensively, junior Bryant Bowen continues to lead the Golden Eagles with a .365 batting average to go along with eight home runs and 39 RBI. Junior Hunter Slater, a national player of the week by Collegiate Baseball as he tied two school records versus New Orleans with three home runs and eight RBI, ranks second in hitting at .331 with nine homers and a team-best 46 RBI.
Junior Matt Wallner, who hit a pair of home runs last weekend, now holds 47 for his career, which ranks No. 3 on the school's career chart behind Marc Maddox (53) and Jeff Cook (50).
Southern Miss senior right-hander Jarod Wright (0-2, 6.05 ERA) will make the start for the Golden Eagles against junior left-hander Zack Phillips (4-2, 4.43 ERA) for the Rebels.
Tickets can be purchased at SouthernMissTickets.com or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Athletic Tickets Office during normal business hours to avoid potential long lines on game day. The Pete Taylor Park Box Office will open two hours prior to the game's first pitch.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App. A paid webstream is also available through C-USA.TV.
