MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Walker Powell tossed a complete game and the Golden Eagles used a five-run, sixth inning to capture a 7-1 series-opening victory over Middle Tennessee Friday night at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Golden Eagles (27-13, 15-4 C-USA) won for the sixth-straight contest and moved into first place by themselves as Florida Atlantic dropped a 7-2 decision at home to Old Dominion. The win also marked the 15th consecutive triumph for Southern Miss over the Blue Raiders (16-26, 9-10).
After the teams traded runs in the second frame, then both Powell and MT starter Carson Lester kept each other's teams off the scoreboard until the sixth when the Golden Eagles took the lead for good.
Junior Matt Wallner led off the five-run stanza with a solo homer to right-centerfield. It was his 11th of the season and 46th of his career, tying him with Brad Willcutt (2002-05) for third place on the school's career chart.
After a groundout, the Golden Eagles registered four consecutive singles by Hunter LeBlanc, Danny Lynch, Will McGillis and Gabe Montenegro. The final two from McGillis and Montenegro each drove in a run. Matthew Guidry then added a sacrifice fly and Hunter Slater a run-scoring double to complete the scoring.
The Golden Eagles added one more tally in the ninth on an RBI single from Cole Donaldson. With that hit, all nine Golden Eagle starters registered at least one hit, with Slater, Wallner, LeBlanc, Lynch and McGillis tallying two apiece.
Meanwhile, Powell limited the Blue Raiders to just six hits and no walks with a career-high 10 strikeouts as he notched his third complete game of the campaign. After getting a pop out to start the ninth, Powell then gave up three-straight singles to load the bases, but got two strikeouts in a row to end the contest and improve to 5-2 on the season.
The only run allowed was a solo homer to Brycen Thomas in the second frame. That came after McGillis drove in the game's first run in the top half of the inning with a single.
Powell retired 10 straight MT batters at one point during the contest and allowed only three hits over the first eight frames.
Lester allowed six runs on 11 hits with a walk and a strikeout over 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-5.
The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m., contest.
