MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Cody Carroll threw seven strong relief innings and Southern Miss erased a three-run deficit to collect an 11-3 Conference USA victory over Middle Tennessee Saturday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Golden Eagles (28-13 overall, 16-4 C-USA) won their fifth league series and now have won seven games in a row dating back to Charlotte last weekend. Scott Berry's club holds a two-game lead over Florida Atlantic and a four-game advantage over Louisiana Tech after each squad lost Saturday with 10 games to play in the league regular season.
Bryant Bowen led three Golden Eagles with three hits and four RBI, while Matt Wallner and Erick Hoard each added three as well in the 15-hit Southern Miss attack.
The Blue Raiders (16-27, 9-11) chased Southern Miss starter Stevie Powers after one inning as they scored two runs on three hits and took advantage of one walk, despite the left-hander posting a pair of strikeouts.
Carroll (2-0) entered the game to start the second and limited MT to a run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts over the next seven frames to capture the victory.
The only run he allowed was a solo homer in the third by Brett Stratinsky, which was his first of the season.
Down 3-0, the Golden Eagles chipped away at the home team's lead with a solo run in the fifth, scoring on a Brant Blaylock double play.
Southern Miss then took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth. After back-to-back, one-out singles from Hunter LeBlanc and Matthew Guidry, Hunter Slater moved the runners up with a ground out before Bowen tied the game with his first triple of the year to center.
Wallner then laced a single off the pitcher's glove to score Bowen, giving the Eagles the lead.
Southern Miss put the game away one frame later with six more runs.
On just four hits, the Golden Eagles got a two-run triple from Guidry, an RBI single from Slater, a two-run homer by Bowen – his eighth of the year – before Wallner clubbed his 12th homer of the year down the rightfield line.
For Wallner, it was his 47th career home run, which put him into sole possession of third place for career round-trippers for the school.
Southern Miss scored their final run in the eighth on a Blue Raider error.
MT starter Peyton Wigginton (4-3) gave up four runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The two teams complete the series with 1 p.m., contest Sunday.
