HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team begins its first and only five-game week when the complete a four-game homestand Tuesday against Louisiana-Lafayette in a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles started the homestand by outscoring Charlotte 29-10 in a three-game Conference USA sweep over the weekend to improve to 24-13 overall and 14-4 in league play, tying them for first place in league play with Florida Atlantic. The Ragin' Cajuns (20-23) enter the game having lost all three games at UT Arlington last weekend in Sun Belt Conference play.
Southern Miss looks to avenge an earlier season loss to the Ragin' Cajuns, as they dropped a 6-5 decision in Lafayette, last month on a 12th-inning walk-off home run by Orynn Veillon.
Offensively, junior Bryant Bowen continues to lead the Golden Eagles with a .381 batting average to go along with a 21-game hitting streak. The streak ties for the eighth-longest in school history with five other players, including Chase Scott who was the last person to reach 21 games in 2015.
After hitting three homers over the weekend versus the 49ers, junior Matt Wallner now has 45 career home runs which puts him into a fourth-place tie with Fred Cooley (1987-89) on the school's career chart.
Senior Hunter Slater continues to hit well for the Golden Eagles with a .338 batting mark. Freshman Danny Lynch, who saw a 13-game hitting streak end last Saturday, holds a .328 batting average, while sophomore Gabe Montenegro is at .308.
The Golden Eagles look to junior right-hander Cody Carroll (1-0, 3.2) to start on the mound as he will be the 11th different Golden Eagle to start a game for the team this season.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area.
