
FIU Uses Three-Run Third to Defeat Southern Miss 6-4 in Series Opener at Miami

MIAMI, Fla. – Logan Allen pitched six strong innings and FIU rode a three-run third inning to defeat Southern Miss 6-4 Friday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (20-11, 10-3 C-USA) dropped their second-straight game, while FIU improved to 14-19 and 5-8.
Allen, the Panther ace, fanned 13 Golden Eagles and allowed three runs on seven hits with just one walk. Allen registered the victory, improving to 4-2 on the season.
FIU jumped out to the early lead with a solo run in the first.
After back-to-back singles from Derek Cartaya and Austin Shenton, Adan Fernandez drove in the first run with a groundout.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the second with a sacrifice fly by Brant Blaylock, but left two runners on base to end the frame. In all, Southern Miss stranded 12 base runners in the contest.
The Panthers then took the lead for good with their three-run third. The home squad scored its runs on five hits and chased Golden Eagle starter Walker Powell (3-2) after 2 2/3 innings. Powell allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts to suffer the loss.
FIU tacked on another run in the fifth on a Juan Teixeira single to make the score 5-1.
Matt Wallner, who drove in three runs on a pair of hits, cut the gap to 5-3 with a two-run opposite field home run in the sixth. It was Wallner's team-high sixth homer of the year and the 41st of his Golden Eagle career, moving into seventh place on the school career charts.
Wallner drove in Bryant Bowen, who singled to start the frame to extend his team-high hitting streak to 15 games.
The Panthers added another run on a Kaeber Rog run-scoring single in the eighth.
Wallner drove in his last run in the ninth to close the gap to 6-4, but that was as close as the Eagles could get in the final frame.
The Golden Eagles fanned a season-high 18 times in the contest.
The two teams continue the series with a 5 p.m., CT contest, Saturday.
