MIAMI, Fla. – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its five-game road swing when they play a three-game weekend Conference USA series at FIU.
The Golden Eagles take on the Panthers (13-19, 4-8 C-USA) at FIU Baseball Stadium Friday at 6 p.m. CT, Saturday at 5 p.m. CT and Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
Southern Miss looks to keep pace with league leader Florida Atlantic, who they trail by one game at the top of the C-USA standings. Scott Berry's team holds a 20-10 overall record, while posting a 10-2 league mark. That is just one game behind FAU's 11-1 C-USA record through the first four weekends of play.
The Golden Eagles are trying to improve the current road swing, which started Tuesday with an 11-2 loss to Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
One positive from Tuesday's loss included junior Bryant Bowen, who extended his team-high hitting streak to 14 games with a run-scoring single in the opening frame. Bowen, the Shreveport, La., native added a double in the contest and continues to lead the Golden Eagles in batting with a .400 hitting mark. It is the longest Southern Miss hitting streak since Mason Irby enjoyed a 16-gamer late last season.
Two other Golden Eagles currently sport .300-plus batting marks, including senior Hunter Slater, who holds a .339 average, while sophomore Gabe Montenegro is at .309.
Freshmen Danny Lynch and Will McGillis also continue to swing a hot bat, as both sport respective season-high hitting streaks of seven games apiece.
Southern Miss plans to utilize the same rotation for the second weekend in a row in the trio of junior right-hander Walker Powell (3-1, 2.93 ERA), senior left-hander Stevie Powers (2-2, 4.03 ERA) and freshman right Gabe Shepard (0-0, 3.37).
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App.
