HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team hits the road this week for the first of four games away from Pete Taylor Park when they travel to Metairie, La., Tuesday to take on Nicholls State in a 6:30 p.m., contest at Zephyr Field.
The Golden Eagles (15-6) look to extend their current seven-game winning streak, as they also have claimed 11 of their last 12 contests after sweeping Old Dominion at home last weekend. The Colonels (13-12) won their home Southland Conference series over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Southern Miss outscored the visiting Monarchs by 30 runs last weekend and that series scoring margin was the fourth highest for the program since the inaugural season of C-USA in 1996. The top three highest scoring margin in C-USA series are +38 against UCF (2009), followed by +37 against Memphis (2008), +34 versus Saint Louis (2004).
Â
The Golden Eagles also have collected double digit hits in 12 games this season, including in each of the last eight games. Southern Miss registered a season-high 15 hits last Saturday versus ODU and, over the last eight games, the squad has raised its team's batting average from .244 to .285.
Â
A big reason for the recent surge boils down to the success of the top third of the order in Gabe Montenegro, Matt Guidry and Hunter Slater. Over the current winning streak, the trio is hitting a combined .463 (38x82) with 35 runs (53 percent of the runs scored over that span), five doubles, a triple, four home runs and 23 RBI to go along with 20 walks, four hit by pitches and only 13 strikeouts.
Â
Guidry currently enjoys the team's best 10-game hitting streak, which is the longest of his career. He is batting .412 (14x37) during this stretch with three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 10 RBI.
Â
As for the Golden Eagle pitching staff, they surrendered just four runs over the weekend, only two of which were earned, to lower the team's ERA to 2.90.
Â
The two teams played once last season with the Golden Eagles capturing a 20-4 victory in Pensacola, Fla.
Â
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App.
