HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss beach volleyball team will continue its road stretch this weekend at The Tiger Beach Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. The Golden Eagles, who have played their last nine games on the road, (7-13, 0-5 CCSA) are paired with No. 4 LSU, No. 18 Georgia State, (RV) Tulane and Spring Hill. Those four teams have a combined record of 42-21.
Last time out
At The Governors Challenge in Clarksville, Tenn., the Golden Eagles cruised to a 2-1 record. A 4-1 win over Missouri Baptist on Friday morning was highlighted by Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth winning their 10th match of the season. Central Arkansas got the best of Southern Miss on Friday afternoon, but Kellie Garraway and Cyan Blackdeer won their third match together after becoming a pair earlier in the week. The Golden Eagles closed out their spring break trip with a shutout over Tusculum. Favre/Hepworth reached a team-high 11 wins and Garraway/Blackdeer extended their winning streak to two matches. As a team, Southern Miss has won five of its last seven matches.
Scouting Tulane (RV)
The Green Wave, who are receiving votes in this weeks AVCA Rankings, head to LSU with an 11-7 record. Tulane and Southern Miss butted heads twice on March 5 for the first home match in Southern Miss history, in which Tulane took both. Tulane took the third meeting when the two teams met three days later at The March to May in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Scouting #19 Georgia State
The Golden Eagles and Panthers meet again after already having one epic showdown when Georgia State pulled out a 3-2 win at The March to May. Hepworth/Favre stole a game at the No. 4 pairing and Jessica Austin/Madison Lawler took another one at the No. 5 pairing. The Panthers won in straight sets at the top pairings, while Piper Matsumoto/Garraway dropped a three-set thriller. Overall, Georgia State sits at 10-8 and heads to Baton Rouge after dropping three of their four games at the Gamecock Grand Slam last weekend.
Scouting Spring Hill
Southern Miss and Spring Hill are no strangers to each other after meeting on three occasions already. The Badgers have won all three, but all have been decided late in the contest. The Badgers are coming off a 5-0 win over William Carey and have won five of their last six.
Scouting #4 LSU
When Southern Miss and No. 4 LSU battle on Saturday, the Tigers will be the highest-ranked opponent the Golden Eagles have ever faced. The host team has played 11 ranked opponents this season en route to a 7-4 record in those games. Claire Coppola/Kristen Nuss, who were a CCSA Pair of the Week selection, lead LSU with an 11-2 record at the top pairing. The two have posted an 8-2 record in their last 10 matches. Last Friday night, LSU shutout Coastal Carolina to open its new stadium.
