Golden Eagles Split on Day Two of UNO Invitational

COVINGTON, La. - The Southern Miss beach volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday morning after sweeping Nicholls State. The Golden Eagles (2-5, 0-0 CCSA) ended the New Orleans Innovational with a 3-2 loss to Spring Hill College.
Match 1 vs. Nicholls State
Lindsey Smith and Jessica Austin dominated at the No. 5 pairing after allowing just a total of 24 points over two sets against Lydia Frederick and Sydney Swann. Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth got back in the win column after sweeping Emily Venable and Katie Jones via a 21-12 score in the first and second set. At the No. 3 pairing, Kellie Garraway and Piper Matsumoto snagged another win for the Golden Eagles after defeating Maddie Lowe and Meghan Wozniak, 21-10, 21-14.
Cyan Blackdeer and Abbey Wilson had a day on court two, dropping just seven points in the first set of their match against Kylie Lockhart and Emily Gauthreaux. The duo followed the 21-7 first-set win with a 21-10 second-set win. Kylie Grandy and Lindsey Legg had an equally as dominant performance at the No. 1 pairing, beating Emily Weimer and Jennifer Olivarez, 21-14, 21-12.
Match 2 vs. Spring Hill
The Golden Eagles received two wins against Spring Hill, who defeated the Golden Eagles less than a week ago in Mobile, Ala. Grandy and Legg added their third win of the weekend after narrowly defeating Payton Gidney and Kassandra Fairly, 22-20, 20-17. Wilson and Blackdeer also added another win on court two with a 17-21, 21-16, 15-10 victory over Brittany Bilotti and Taylor Hurst. From there, Spring Hill swept the final three pairings.
Garraway and Matsumoto were swept in two sets, 21-17, 21-13. Heworth and Favre dropped a three-set match on court four after winning the second set. Sarah Senft and Emily Greim won the second and third set by a 21-19, 15-10 score, respectively. Madison Lawler joined Austin on court five for the afternoon cap and fell 21-19, 21-15 to Emmarose Neibert and Emily Sullivan.
Southern Miss will host Tulane on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Southern Miss Beach Courts. The match marks the first Division I Beach Volleyball game hosted by a university in the state Mississippi. The Golden Eagles have won two of their last four games heading into a historic match.
