Junior right-hander Abby Trahan led the Golden Eagles with a complete game shutout and also tied her season-high of nine strikeouts.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (15-12, 2-4) defeated C-USA foe Florida Atlantic (14-13, 2-1), 2-0 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Southern Miss shortstop Lacey Sumerlin who has been one of the most clutch hitters in the Golden Eagles' lineup this season, proved to be just that for the Golden Eagles on Sunday.
With two outs in the top of the first inning and Destini Brown on third base, Sumerlin lined an RBI single to center field to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Holding a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the third inning, Southern Miss collected an insurance run courtesy of a sacrifice fly to center field from first baseman Sarah Van Schaik that scored Karley Nichols from third base.
The Golden Eagles 2-0 lead proved to be enough for a game three victory over Florida Atlantic, thanks in large part to the performance of junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan in the circle.
Trahan delivered her biggest game of the season when the Golden Eagles needed it most.
The Kaplan, La. native went the distance in Sunday's contest, tying her season-high of nine strikeouts, en route to notching a complete-game shutout.
In seven innings pitched, Trahan surrendered just two hits, did not issue any walks, and collected her fifth win of the season.
