Southern Miss Softball Drops Tuesday Night Contest to South Alabama, 4-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (15-13, 2-4) were defeated by the South Alabama Jaguars (11-15, 1-5) by a final score of 4-0 on Tuesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings of play with both starting pitchers dealing in the circle.
Â
South Alabama's offense got things going in the top of the fourth inning though when Katelyn Gruich sent a solo shot over the left field wall to put the Jaguars up, 1-0.

The Jaguars added two more runs to their total in the top of the fifth inning, extending their lead, 3-0 after Jordyn Calderon scored on a Southern Miss throwing error and Megan Harris scored on a double to left field by Victoria Ortiz.

South Alabama notched their fourth and final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of a groundout to second base by Kennedy Cronan that allowed Ortiz to cross the plate.
Â
South Alabama starting pitcher Alexis Reid (8-9) earned the win while Southern Miss starter Bailie Springfield (5-1) suffered the loss.

Southern Miss will be back in action on Saturday, March 23 when they begin a C-USA road series against UTEP (7-20, 2-4) at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex in El Paso, Texas.

Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT) with game two to follow shortly afterwards.

The Golden Eagles and the Miners will conclude the weekend series with a single-game series finale at 1:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, March 24.
