HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After playing the last seven games at home, the Southern Miss baseball team takes to the road for a four-game spring break swing starting Wednesday night with a 6:30 p.m., contest at Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Golden Eagles, winners of their last four games, enter the week with an 8-5 record. The Ragin' Cajuns, prior to a Tuesday night home contest with New Orleans, are 6-9 having dropped two of three to Loyola Marymount last weekend at home.
Louisiana-Lafayette leads the series 27-22 which dates back to the 1925 season. The two teams split a pair of games last season in Hattiesburg.
Southern Miss boasts three players with .300 or better averages heading into the Louisiana-Lafayette contest. Leading the way is senior first baseman Hunter Slater, whose .340 batting mark includes a team-high tying two home runs and 11 runs batted in.
Sophomore outfielder Gabe Montenegro ranks second on the club in hitting with a .319 average as he also has posted team-highs for runs (14) and triples (2). Catcher Bryant Bowen, who has hit safely in each of his last five and knocked in three runs last weekend against Holy Cross, holds a .316 batting mark with a homer and four RBI.
The Golden Eagle pitching staff continues to pitch well as they hold a 3.03 team earned run average and have collected 105 strikeouts with only 39 walks in 118 2/3 innings of work this season.
The program finishes the road swing this weekend when they go from Lafayette to Ruston for its Conference USA season-opening series versus Louisiana Tech. Game times are 6 p.m., on Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
