Southern Miss Places Top-5 at Conference Indoor Championships

Both the men and women had great showings at the Conference meet.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss Track & Field had a good showing at the Conference USA Indoor Championships, with school records and meet records set along with top-three finishes.
The men came in fourth place with a score of 85, and the women placed fifth with a score of 59.5.

"On the women's side, the upperclassmen were key in helping us make our way to fifth. Sandra Szpott was really tough for us as well as Rian Robinson. They both scored in multiple events on the second day. Danisha Jones had a storybook ending to a great indoor career. She had the winning throw and a USM school record on her final throw of the competition. It couldn't have been scripted any better. The men were outstanding during both days of competition, with three new C-USA meet records, five champions, and numerous season bests and school records. McKinely West, Eric Richards, Caleb Parker and John Warren wreaked havoc for 48 hours, accounting for 62 of our team points."
Men's Results
60m – McKinely West placed first with a time of 6.64, tying the C-USA Meet record previously set by a runner from East Carolina in 2003 and then a runner from LA Tech in 2016. West also set a new C-USA Meet record in the preliminaries, with a time of 6.61. Chedlin Sagesse came in third in the finals at 6.85.
60m Hurdles – Caleb Parker came in first, setting a new C-USA Meet record and clinching gold at 7.77. Christian Strong finished in sixth place at 8.22.
200m – McKinely West also came in first in the 200m dash, claiming gold and another C-USA Meet record, finishing at 20.66.
400m – Trey Johnson came in fourth for the 400m dash at 46.97.
High Jump – Eric Richards finished in first place and set a new school record with a jump of 2.22m (7'3.5"). Caleb Parker came away with the bronze, placing third with a distance of 2.10m (6'10.75").
Long Jump – John Warren nabbed third place with a jump of 7.33 (24'0.75"). Eric Washington came in fifth with a 7.18m (23'6.75"). Chedlin Sagesse finished in 11th after jumping to a distance of 6.86m (22'6.25").
Triple Jump – John Warren claimed the gold after a jump of 16.29m (53'5.5").
4x400 – The relay team came in fourth place with McKinely West, Trey Johnson, Mamadou Seck and Lorenzen Burton finishing at 3:13.06.
Weight Throw – Thomas Peters finished in 12th place with a distance of 14.76m (48'5.25").
Women's Results
60m – Keiyana Gaskin placed sixth with a time of 7.59.
400m – Rian Robinsonfinished in third, clinching the bronze with a time of 55.34.
1 Mile – Sandra Szpott came in third to take the bronze with a time of 4:54.36. Kate Mattox came in fifth at 5:00.54 and Regen McGee finished in seventh at 5:01.61.
3000m – Sandra Szpott finished in fourth at 9:56.21, Kate Mattox finished in 11th place at 10:04.73, Lina May in 13th with a time of 10:08.79, and Monika Gebarzewska in 14th at 10:13.32.
5000m – Lina May came in eighth, the freshman finishing with a time of 17:41.42. Emma Kate Holdbrooks came in ninth at 17:42.23, and Theresa Harto in 12th with a time of 17:59.85.
High Jump – Zaria Jones jumped her way to fifth place, with a mark of 1.71m (5'7.25"). Jamari Drake tied for sixth with three other jumpers with a mark of 1.66m (5'5.25").
Long Jump – Coming in 13th was Callie Jones, jumping to a mark of 5.57m (18'3.25").
Triple Jump – Finishing 12th and 13th were Marquasha Myers and Callie Jones, with marks of 11.94m (39'2.25") and 11.83m (38'9.75"), respectively.
Shot Put – Danisha Jones grabbed gold with her first-place finish of 15.82m (51'11"), a new school record for Southern Miss.
Weight Throw – Danisha Jones placed again, this time coming in third place with a throw of 18.93m (62'1.25").
4x400 – In the relays, Rian Robinson, Chenelle Ricketts, Aireanna Taylor, and Taylor Harris finished in sixth at 3:47.32.
DMR – In the distance medley, the team of Kate Mattox, Rian Robinson, Regen McGee, and Sandra Szpott finished the relay in second place, grabbing the silver with a time of 12:01.73.

Southern Miss has wrapped up it's indoor season with the Conference Meet, and looks to the possibility of sending student-athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships before starting the outdoor season.
