Golden Eagles Stay Hot at Doubles, Defeat Grambling State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagles (5-0, 0-0 C-USA) stayed hot at doubles again as they cruised to a 7-0 win over Grambling State (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) on Thursday afternoon. Southern Miss' win adds to the programs best start since the 2016 season after that team jumped to 7-0 start.
Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan moved their unbeaten streak to five matches after making quick work of Keren Muswere and Tanya Magunje on court two. The duo jumped to an early lead en route to a 6-1 victory. Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton followed with a win of their own shortly after that. De la Garza and Burton won 6-0 against Idah Longwe and Danna Galeano, which secured the doubles point for the fifth consecutive time this season. On court one, Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse rounded out doubles play with a 6-2 win over Bryttish Burts and Imperia Martinez.
With the singles lineup nearly staying the same in the first four matches, coach Steve Schram decided to shake things up before the Golden Eagles heat to Alabama State and Troy for a two-game road trip. Tanit Lopez earned her first win of the season by forfeit on court six. Yazgan made her court-four debut for the Golden Eagles and the freshman made the most of her opportunity. The Turkey native walked through Magunje with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in straight sets. Amaning was also dominant on court one as she defeated Burts via a 6-0, 6-1 score.
The Tigers continued their struggles on court three as Jerse defeated Longwe in a competitive match. The senior pulled away for a 6-3 win in set one before running away with a 6-1 win in set two. Anastasija Cobanovic, slotted at No. 5 singles, walked away with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Galeano. Pereira wrapped up the day with a 6-0, 6-3 win on court two against Muswere.
The Golden Eagles now head to Alabama State for a 2 p.m. match on Friday afternoon. Southern Miss will then visit Troy for a Sunday matinee.
