
Southern Miss WBB Takes on South Alabama on Sunday

Lady Eagles take on the Jaguars for the 33rd matchup in its history.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball take on the South Alabama Jaguars on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.
It will be the 33rd matchup between Southern Miss (6-2) and South Alabama (4-5). The Lady Eagles lead the series 19-13 with a 12-4 record in Reed Green, but the Jags have a winning streak of two. Under Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, the Lady Eagles are 6-8 against the Jaguars. South Alabama is under the direction of Head Coach Terry Fowler who is in his seventh season. They are 2-4 when playing Southern Miss with him at the helm.Â
It is also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day for Southern Miss, with all University faculty and staff receiving up to two complimentary tickets when they show their ID at the box office in front of Reed Green.Â
The Lady Eagles come off a loss to long-time foe Tulane, who took a 62-58 decision over Southern Miss and ended their five-game win streak. Southern Miss is led by senior Shonte Hailes for points with 127, redshirt sophomore Kelsey Jones in rebounds with 42, and sophomore Daishai Almond in assists with 29. Against Tulane, freshman Liz Gibbs had a great first quarter performance, scoring a season-high eight points. Kelsey Jones made her first career start against the Green Wave.Â
The Jaguars also just faced the Green Wave, but came away with a 62-53 win over Tulane on the road. They are led by senior Shaforia Kines in both points and assists with 152 and 28, respectively, as well as junior Antoinette Lewis in rebounds with 111. The Jaguars have three Mississippians on their roster, including Mahogany Vaught (Olive Branch, Miss.), Savannah Jones (Biloxi, Miss.) and Jadona Davis (Buckatunna, Miss.). So far this season, they have fallen to Rutgers, UAB, Miami (Ohio), Alabama, and Auburn. They have seen wins against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Mobile, Tennessee State, and Tulane. They will play the Lady Eagles' crosstown foe William Carey on Tuesday in Mobile.Â
The last time the two met was last season in Mobile, where South Alabama came away with the win after a Southern Miss surge, 77-68. The Jaguars finished the season 25-11 and went to the WNIT, where they fell to Wyoming in the second game of the tournament.Â
