The senior posted 26 points against the Jaguars on Sunday afternoon.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Lady Eagles were led by senior Respect Leaphart in their 62-55 defeat of the South Alabama Jaguars on Sunday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season in their defeat of South Alabama (4-6).
Respect Leaphart put up 26 points, eight rebounds, as well as three steals, going 8-for-15 from the floor. Pregame, Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said that Leaphart was Southern Miss' advantage because of the mismatch with the fourth player. "When we know there's a mismatch, you've got to go to work then," said Leaphart. "Because what else do you have to do? It was a little pressure but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle."
Senior Shonte Hailes was also a force to be reckoned with, putting up 18 points and four boards, with two 3-pointers and seven assists. She started the game off with five points to her name, her first bucket being a 3-pointer. "She's like a general on the floor," said Leaphart. "Once she starts going, you better come with."
The Lady Eagles' 'Fiesty Bunch' defense was put to work today and did a great job of shutting down one of the Sun Belt's best. Antoinette Lewis, the leading rebounder and blocker of the Jaguars, was shut down today at the hands of the Lady Eagles, being held to just three points. She did not score until the fourth quarter.
Southern Miss was hot in the first two quarters, posting 31 points at the half with the Jaguars posting just nine points in both quarters. After the 31-18 start, the Jaguars came out hot, posting 19 points in the third and 18 in the fourth, holding USM to just 13 points in that final quarter. The Lady Eagles had five out of their 11 players record five or more rebounds, with the majority of them coming on defense. They posted 52 rebounds overall, a season-high for the team. An unsung hero on offense was Alarie Mayze, posting six offensive boards and handing out two assists.
