The Lady Eagles have started their season 2-1 and look to add their first road win.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball hit the road again, this time to Monroe, La. to take on the ULM Warhawks for a noon tip off on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Southern Miss (2-1) looks to pick up its first road win of the season in Louisiana against the Warhawks (0-2).
The Warhawks are led by first-year head coach Brooks Donald Williams, who is a familiar face for Coach McNelis and Southern Miss. Williams was an assistant for McNelis both at Memphis and then at Southern Miss for three seasons - 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07.
"Going to ULM is definitely going to be a special time for me," said Joye Lee-McNelis. "We just had an unbelievable recruiting class and signing class and Brooks Donald Williams is truly the co-author of the other best recruiting class we've ever signed here at Southern Miss. That was with Kendra Reed, Ashley Harrell, Ashley Boehnel, Kristin Chaney ... she was really the one who really made a huge difference for us in jump-starting Southern Miss basketball again when we came to Southern Miss, so she is really special to me. I've known Brooks for many, many years and the thing that I think makes her very special is her tremendous passion to help others be successful, and when opportunity is given to her to be able to help young people live their dreams, she is going to grind it out and do everything she can to help make that happen because that's important to her."

"I've watched them play Ole Miss, I've watched them play Tennessee Tech; her team is definitely a reflection of her. They play very passionate, they are a defensive-minded team, they're grinders. They've got a senior on their team, Lauren Fitch, that will be the fastest player we have played all year – and that's saying a lot when you've played No. 10 team in Mississippi State. Fitch is to the races. We are going to have a hard time keeping her in front of us. She is going to run over you and around you, but she is a very special player. She scored 28 points at Tennessee Tech. They have a freshman in Gara Beth Self that is from north Mississippi that is a really special player that plays in their back court that can score the ball in multiple ways. They have a post player in Diamond Brooks that is inside that is like Kelsey [Jones] that can board it, that can score it, that is aggressive, that is very physical. Doesn't do a lot of fancy stuff, she just gets the job done. They're a guard-dominated team that's going to defend you and grind you out defensively and they run some really nice things off of a dribble-drive and they're going to do everything they can to get to the rim and finish on you. We've got to be able to continue to make some steps...again, this is a journey, it's not just a short sprint...to continue to improve."Â
