Women's Tennis Finishes Fall Play at Seminole All-Conference Showdown

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Southern Miss women's tennis team concluded its fall slate Sunday afternoon with an impressive showing at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown.
The Golden Eagles sent three members to Florida State for the three-day event. They got off to a slow start on Friday, winning just one match. Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, who paired up with Tatum Rice of Arkansas in doubles play for the weekend, picked up the win on Friday in convincing fashion. The Turkey native cruised to a 6-1 win over a North Florida duo.
Southern Miss brought the heat on Saturday, winning five of its six matches over the course of the day. Rice and Yazgan picked up their second doubles win, while Katia de la Garza and Monique Burton avenged Friday's losses with a 7-5 win over Middle Tennessee. All three Golden Eagles added a singles win to their record on Saturday.
De la Garza was the lone Golden Eagle to find a win Sunday. The junior knocked off C-USA rival Lee Barnard in three sets. After storming to a 6-0 win in the first set, de la Garza suffered a 6-2 loss to force a winner-take-all set. In the final frame, de la Garza outlasted the Middle Tennessee junior with a 7-5 score.

"It was a very good fall tournament and the players competed very hard throughout each match. Our goal this fall was to provide a competitive environment and to give the team a chance to compete at a high level. We had good wins over opponents from Middle Tennessee and South Florida and it was good to see good progress and improvement from each player. We are already excited about the upcoming spring season which will feature a very competitive schedule."
