WBB Tips Off Season with Exhibition Against Spring Hill

The Lady Eagles tip off against the Badgers on Saturday at 4pm.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball tip of the 2019-20 season with an exhibition game against the Spring Hill Badgers on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. The exhibition game is free to the public.
The Lady Eagles welcome three new players in junior Jalise Smallwood, sophomore Lauren Gross, and freshman Liz Gibbs. They also welcome several new staff members in Assistant Head Coach Jack Trosper, Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Stephanie Stoglin-Reed, Director of Basketball Operations Christian Barnhill, Graduate Assistant Shelby Beam, and Volunteer Graduate Assistant Londyn Thomas.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis begins her 16th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles basketball program, but is celebrating her 25th year overall as a Lady Eagle after now serving as a player, an assistant, and head coach.Â
Each of the five seniors play a pivotal role for Southern Miss, with two of them being consistent starters on the court. The Lady Eagles return 10 players overall. The experience these players have shows as all have matured after last season. The 2018-19 season had its ups and downs for the Black and Gold, but after starting out 0-4 in Conference play, the Lady Eagles bounced back and found themselves beating WKU and Marshall on the road and then playing in the postseason in the WBI. The Lady Eagles finished 18-14 last season and went 9-7 in Conference finishing in eighth, but boasted a home record of 13-7. It's a new season with new opportunities for this veteran squad. Shonte Hailes leads the pack as she was named Preseason All-Conference for the second year in a row.
The Spring Hill Badgers are led by senior forward Tiffany Valentine, who was tabbed Preseason All-SIAC. She played every game for the Badgers and finished the season with 548 points. Spring Hill finished their 2018-19 season with a record of 12-16 and a conference record of 7-10. They are led by Head Coach Karen McConico who is in her ninth season in Mobile.Â
