HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's basketball team came away with the 83-66 win as they hosted the Spring Hill Badgers for an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum.
The first quarter saw both Spring Hill and Southern Miss working out the preseason kinks, but Southern Miss found their groove in the second quarter where they outscored the Badgers 29 to 13. Spring Hill made it interesting in the second half but couldn't keep up with the Lady Eagles.
All players that were dressed out saw time on the floor, and all of them scored. The Lady Eagles scored 33 points off turnovers and had 11 second chance points.
Southern Miss was led by Preseason All-Conference pick Shonte Hailes, who put up 22 points against the Badgers. The senior posted two 3-pointers and went 9-for-16 overall, while also tallying five steals and five rebounds. Allie Kennedy had 14 points of her own after making four 3-pointers and one jumper. Sophomore Destiny Smith had a breakout game where she scored 12 points, was 4-for-4 from the free throw line and recorded two steals. Newcomers Jalise Smallwood and Liz Gibbs both scored and made a seamless transition into their roles with Lady Eagle basketball. Amber Landing had three blocks and eight boards, leading the team in both categories. Alarie Mayze had six assists and just behind her was sophomore Daishai Almond with five.
