HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) fired rounds of 71 and 69 Tuesday to place tied for second in the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational in Bridgeport, W.Va.
Latter, who tied his career low round over the final 18 holes, finished with a 215 total, just two strokes behind medalist Kevin Scherr's 213 of Youngstown State. Latter tied with four other players for second place in the event and jumped from ninth into the second position over the final circuit.
The play by the freshman helped the Golden Eagles post a third-place finish as they collected team scores of 298 and 287 to complete the 54-hole event at the 7,308-yard, par-72 Pete Dye Golf Club with a 885, finishing 21 strokes behind No. 25 and host West Virginia (864), followed by league foe Florida Atlantic (867) by 18 strokes.
"Great team effort for our guys this week as every player contributed to help us finish strong," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "This is exactly what you want in your program. When someone is having a tough round, another player needs to step up and post a good number for the team. Very proud of these guys performance this week. We picked up a lot of wins on teams we probably will not see for the remainder of the season."
Freshman Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added rounds of 74 and 75 to tie for No. 20 in the event with a 224, while junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) added a 77 and a 73 and junior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) collected a 76 and a 70 to each finish with a 27th-place tie with a 226 score.
Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) shot a pair of 77s to end his event with a 228 and a 34th-place tie.
